Being in Community

Earlier this month, we spent some time in conversation with Puget Sound public radio station KUOW, exploring a big question: Is ethical wealth possible in Seattle? Over the course of that wide-ranging interview, we kept circling back to one phrase—in community—but found ourselves struggling to define it. Being in community, informed by community, learning in community.

In May, our newsletter theme “Stay Engaged” served as a call to action—recognizing that even as summer routines begin to take hold, the need for intentional, equity-driven work doesn’t pause. In June, we carried that energy forward. We showed up—in community spaces, at events, and in conversation with partners—focused on listening, learning, and contributing where we could. Our understanding of what it means to be in community as a values-aligned wealth management firm is taking shape.

This newsletter highlights some of the meaningful events and experiences we’ve participated in over the last month or so. Uncertainty remains a constant, but connection—to people, to purpose, to values—continues to ground us. This month, we’ve leaned in by attending community gatherings, deepening relationships, staying present in hard conversations, we’ve committed to being active participants in the moment we’re in.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

EFM Investor Tour

The EFM Olympic Forest Investor Tour was an inspiring two days filled with forest walks, talks, and related learnings. In addition to going deep on sustainable forestry management, we also toured a mill to see EFM logs being processed into finished lumber, learned about EFM's relationship with the Olympic Discovery Trail organizers and builders, and gained a deeper understanding of the innovative work the team and partners are doing to create, value and validate carbon credits, and more. We also found time for lots of good food, side conversations, and a chance to slow down and connect with the abundance and natural wonders of Washington's temperate rainforest.

Magic Cabinet’s New Horizon event

We joined Magic Cabinet's New Horizons event at the NW African American Museum on June 13th to honor the work of nine non-profit organizations that recently completed a five year cohort based program designed around collaborative learning and participatory grant making. Together we celebrated and recognized the work, growth and success of the following organizations: Casa Latina, Zeno, NW African America Museum, East African Community Services, Community Passageways, Southeast Seattle Education Coalition, Got Green, Young Women Empowered Ventures 

Community Passageways Spring Fling event

Humanize Wealth Partner, Jenae, recently joined the board of Seattle nonprofit Community Passageways. We learned directly from staff about the incredible work the organization is doing in schools, communities, jails and court rooms. Thanks to it’s growing donor base, Community Passageways is able to provide more direct services, more ambassadors, and more emergency relief to its participants and local communities. CELEBRATING PRIDE

Even as we write this newsletter, news from the Supreme Court shows that threats to the LGBTQIA+ community continue at devastating pace.

We continue to witness this community fight for their basic rights, and do so with tenacity, love, and joy. Here are some Seattle-based non-profit organizations doing important work to support the LGBTQIA+ community. We encourage you to find and support organizations in your own community doing similar work.

GenPride advocates for the unique needs of older LGBTQIA+ adults, offers innovative programs and services that promote wellbeing and prevent social isolation, cultivates belonging through community connection, and works to eliminate discrimination in all its forms.

Entre Hermanos is fighting for the dignity, rights, and justice of the Latine LGBTQIA+ and migrant community through disease prevention, education, support services, advocacy and community building.

Lavender Rights Project elevates the power, autonomy, and leadership of the Black intersex & gender diverse community through intersectional legal and social services.

​AI is often celebrated as a tool to accelerate climate progress. But what happens when the same technology is used to deepen the crisis? While Big Tech touts AI as a sustainability solution, it is simultaneously enabling the fossil fuel industry with powerful digital tools—boosting extraction, extending oil and gas operations, and locking in decades of future emissions. These “enabled emissions” far exceed the footprint of AI infrastructure itself, yet remain absent from most climate policy and discourse.

​In this talk, two former Responsible AI and sustainability leads at Microsoft (Holly & Will Alpine) share their insider story: a years-long internal campaign for accountability, and why they ultimately left. Now, they’re building a movement to expose this critical blind spot—and push for governance that aligns digital infrastructure with climate science and justice.
